DIY Stovetop Cleaner: An all-natural, inexpensive, and effective way to clean your stovetop.

Non-toxic and Effective Stove top Cleaner
DIY stovetop cleaner for a sparkling stove.

I use this DIY all-natural stovetop cleaner regularly because it works so well and as a bonus, it's budget-friendly, and completely non-toxic. I've been using this stovetop cleaner for a long time along with my DIY scouring scrub and DIY window cleaner. While I love all of my DIY cleaning recipes, these three are my favorite because they tackle some of the toughest cleaning challenges. Cleaning the stovetop and sliding glass doors are two of my least favorite things to do. However, with a large family, there's always plenty of cooking and constant traffic in and out. Thankfully, this stovetop cleaner makes the tasks much easier.

Before we dive into the DIY stovetop cleaner recipe, let’s take a moment to explore the benefits of using natural DIY cleaning products.

Spray bottle with vinegar and lemon essential oil
Keep a spray bottle filled with vinegar and lemon essential oil handy so it's ready for cleaning your stove.

Using natural cleaners over store-bought ones offers several benefits:

1. Non-Toxic: Natural cleaners are free from harsh chemicals like ammonia, bleach, and synthetic fragrances, making them safer for you, your family, and your pets.

2. Eco-Friendly: Many natural ingredients, like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils, are biodegradable and have minimal environmental impact, unlike many commercial cleaners that contribute to pollution.

3. Cost-Effective: Homemade natural cleaners are often much cheaper than store-bought alternatives, saving you money in the long run.

4. Customizable: You can tailor DIY cleaners to suit your specific needs, adding essential oils or adjusting the strength of the solution.

5. Gentler on Surfaces: Natural ingredients are usually less abrasive, which can help preserve the finish and integrity of your appliances, countertops, and other surfaces.

6. Better for Allergies: Many store-bought cleaners contain allergens or irritants, while natural alternatives are less likely to cause respiratory issues or skin irritation.

7. No Hidden Chemicals: With DIY cleaners, you know exactly what’s in your products, whereas store-bought ones may contain undisclosed or harmful ingredients.

8. Fresh, Natural Scents: Instead of synthetic fragrances, natural cleaners often use essential oils, which provide refreshing, non-toxic aromas that won’t overwhelm your space.

9. Effective and Powerful: Natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon have long been proven effective in tackling dirt, grime, grease, and stains.

These benefits make natural cleaners a smart and sustainable choice for a healthier home and environment.

How do baking soda and vinegar clean a stovetop?

Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive to scrub away stains, while vinegar’s acidity helps dissolve grime. When combined, they create a fizzing action that lifts grease and debris, making the cleanup process fast and effective. I like adding a natural scent to my DIY cleaning products, so I mix a few drops of lemon essential oil into the vinegar. Not only does it give the DIY stovetop cleaner a fresh, non-toxic fragrance, but it also boosts its cleaning power. Lemon essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, making it effective for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Lemon oil also breaks down grease and grime, making it ideal for kitchen and stovetop cleaning.

What You Will Need

  • Baking soda

  • White vinegar

  • Spray bottle for the vinegar

  • Lemon essential oil (optional)

How to Use DIY Stovetop Cleaner

1. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the dirty areas of your stovetop.

2. Spray white vinegar onto the baking soda, allowing it to fizz and foam.

3. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to loosen the grime.

4. Use a soft sponge to wipe away the fizz, lifting away stains and grease. You may have to wipe and rinse twice.

5. For tougher spots, reapply the mixture or use a soft cloth to scrub gently.

Pro Tip

For an extra boost, add a few drops of essential oil (like lemon or orange) to the vinegar for a fresh scent and added cleaning power. Incorporating lemon essential oil into DIY cleaners can enhance their effectiveness while keeping the products environmentally friendly and safe to use.

Avoid scrubbing too hard on delicate surfaces like glass stovetops to prevent scratches. It’s better to let food residue soak in cleaning solution rather than scrubbing too hard. This allows the solution time to break down tough spots, reducing the risk of damaging surfaces while making cleanup easier.

This DIY stovetop cleaner is budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and requires only two simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and hello to a sparkling clean stovetop!
