Here’s another way I love to use cranberries to bring holiday cheer into my home. I picked up a vase from Dollar Tree, added fresh greenery, and cranberries, filled the vase with water leaving a couple inches at the top for a floating candle, and created a stunning centerpiece for my table. You can make several jars for a larger display or use a single jar to decorate a mantel or end table.

How to Dry Cranberries: Step-by-Step Guide

Ingredients and Supplies For Drying Cranberries

To get started, gather these items:

  • Fresh cranberries

  • Water

  • A large pot

  • Strainer

  • Paper towels

  • Baking sheets

  • An oven or dehydrator

Step 1: Prepare Your Cranberries

Begin by rinsing your fresh cranberries under cool water. Look for any that are soft or damaged and discard those to ensure you have only the best fruit for drying.

Step 2: Blanching Cranberries

Bring a pot of water to a boil and drop in the cranberries for about 45-60 seconds or until they start to pop and open.;/p This crucial step cracks their skins, allowing moisture to escape while drying. It also retains its color.

Step 3: Cool and Drain

After blanching, drain the cranberries using a strainer. Rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. This helps preserve their texture and flavor.

Step 4: Drying Options

You have two main options for drying cranberries: the oven or a dehydrator.

Using an Oven:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).

  2. Spread the cranberries on a baking sheet and absorb as much moisture as you can with paper towels.

  3. Bake for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally until they are dry but still slightly plump.

  4. Let the cranberries continue to air dry for 24 hours after baking.

Using a Dehydrator:

  1. Arrange the cranberries on dehydrator trays.

  2. Set your dehydrator to 135°F (57°C) and dry for 8-10 hours.

Once dried, let the cranberries cool completely before using them in your crafting.

Crafting A Stunning Cranberry Garland

With your dried cranberries ready, let’s move on to the exciting part of this project: creating your cranberry garland!

Supplies Needed

  • Dried cranberries

  • Needle and strong thread or thin twine.

  • Scissors

  • Optional: Decorative elements like popcorn, dried orange slices, or cinnamon sticks for added flair

Step 1: Threading Your Cranberries

Thread your needle and knot the end. Carefully pierce through the center of each dried cranberry, leaving a little space between each berry.

Step 2: Mix-In Other Elements

Let your creativity flow! You can alternate cranberries with dried fruits, popcorn, or even cinnamon sticks for an exciting texture and aroma. For instance, mixing three slices of dried oranges for every five cranberries can create an appealing contrast in color and fragrance.

Step 3: Finish and Hang

Once you’ve created a garland of your desired length, tie a knot at the end of the thread. Drape your garland over the mantelpiece, around door frames, or even decorate your Christmas tree for that extra festive touch.

No time to dry cranberries? No problem! You can use fresh cranberries to add a pop of color to your greenery. Simply follow the same method as stringing dried cranberries.
