Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing Recipe

Homemade Ranch Dressing Recipe.

This creamy and tangy homemade ranch dressing recipe is easy to make and flavorful.

Does anything say Summer better than fresh greens and veggies topped with ranch dressing? How about a homemade ranch dressing recipe that is simple to whip up, cheap to make, and tastes better than a store–bought ranch dressing? The first time I made homemade ranch dressing I thought ok this was too easy, how can such a simple recipe taste good? I called my granddaughter into the kitchen and let her be the first one to try it. Since she loves ranch dressing and most importantly since she's seven years old I knew if she liked it, it has to be good. She loved this homemade ranch dressing.

Homemade dressings are a great place to start if you are learning to cook from scratch or simply looking for healthier ingredients. Homemade ranch dressing takes minutes to whip up with ingredients you most likely have in your pantry. This recipe does call for ½ cup of buttermilk which is something you most likely don't have on hand. That's ok! You can make a buttermilk substitute.

How do I make a buttermilk substitute?

Add one tablespoon of vinegar to one cup of milk. Let the milk mixture stand for 5-10 minutes. For this ranch dressing recipe cut it in half. One and a half teaspoons of vinegar and a half cup of milk.

Ingredients For Homemade Ranch Dressing

½ cup buttermilk or 1 ½ teaspoons of white vinegar added to ½ cup of milk. Stir, and let it sit for 6-10 minutes

½ cup mayonnaise

½ cup sour cream

2 tsp lemon juice or 1 tsp white vinegar

1 tsp dried parsley

2 tbsp dried chives

½ tsp dried dill

2 cloves of garlic finely chopped and smashed or 2 teaspoons of roasted garlic

½ tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Why do you smash garlic with salt?

Salt changes the texture and flavor of garlic and pulverizes it making it softer and more of a paste consistency. This is a good technique for making salad dressing and dips because it gives you the finest minced garlic possible. Smashing garlic with salt prevents hard bites of garlic in a smooth and creamy dressing or dip.

Instructions For Smashing Garlic

On a cutting board smash the garlic using the flat side of a knife and the heel of your hand. Remove the peel and add a pinch of salt to the smashed garlic and mince. Once the garlic is finely minced, continue smashing using the flat side of a knife until a paste starts to form.

Instructions For Homemade Ranch Dressing

In a bowl, combine all of the ranch dressing ingredients and whisk well to combine. If you are using finely chopped garlic and not smashing it you may want to put the ranch dressing in a blender for a bit to pulverize the garlic.

Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.

I have to share this blooper photo. Bless her little heart she wanted to help Nana.
