Key Ingredients for Soothing Dry Skin Balm
You'll need the following nourishing ingredients to make a highly effective homemade dry skin balm.
Shea Butter: A rich, ultra-moisturizing butter that softens and heals dry skin.
Beeswax: Forms a protective barrier to lock in moisture.
Solid Coconut Oil: Delivers deep hydration while offering natural antimicrobial benefits.
Please Note: This recipe uses solid coconut oil.
Olive Oil: Boasts a smooth texture, making it excellent for moisturizing dry skin. Packed with antioxidants, it also helps combat signs of aging.
Vitamin E Oil: A natural antioxidant that helps repair and protect skin.
Essential Oils (Optional) Lavender or chamomile for extra soothing benefits. Lavender essential oil is a great addition to a homemade dry skin balm due to its numerous skin-nourishing benefits. Here are the key benefits of lavender essential oil that make it a great addition to homemade dry skin balm.
Deep Hydration Helps soothe and moisturize dry, flaky skin.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties Reduces redness, irritation, and inflammation, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
Promotes Healing Aids in the repair of cracked or damaged skin, speeding up the healing process.
Calming Aroma Offers a relaxing scent that promotes stress relief and better sleep.
Tips for Making Homemade Dry Skin Balm:
1. Use Quality Nourishing Ingredients – Dry Skin Balm is easy to make and customizable. This recipe uses shea butter and olive oil, but you can switch it up and try mango butter or jojoba oil.
2. Melt Ingredients Slowly – Use a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water to slowly melt your oils and butter without burning them. I prefer to use the microwave stirring frequently.
3. Customize with Essential Oils – Add skin-soothing essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or calendula for extra hydration and healing properties. Avoid strong oils if making balm for babies.
4. Test the Consistency – Place a small amount in the fridge for a few minutes before pouring the balm into containers to check if it’s the right texture. Adjust by adding more beeswax for a firmer balm or more oil for a softer one. If you follow the recipe, the consistency should turn out well. However, if it's not quite right, you can re-melt the mixture and adjust as needed.
5. Store in a Cool, Dry Place – Keep your balm in a glass jar or tin and store it away from direct sunlight to prevent it from melting or going rancid.
6. Apply on Damp Skin – For best results, apply the balm after a bath or shower to help lock in moisture and keep skin soft.
7. Make Small Batches – Since homemade balms don’t contain preservatives, it’s best to make smaller batches to keep them fresh and effective.

DIY Homemade Dry Skin Balm Recipe
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup solid coconut oil
2 tbsp beeswax pellets
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp vitamin E oil or 4-5 vitamin E capsules (optional)
10 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
Small containers ( I purchased a pack of 6 small tin containers at Dollar Tree)
Instructions
Melt the ingredients: In a double boiler or microwave, melt the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter over low heat. Stir occasionally until fully liquefied.
Add Oils: Remove from heat, cool slightly, and mix in the olive oil, vitamin E, and essential oils and stir well.
Add the essential oil after the mixture has cooled somewhat but is still liquid. If the mixture is too hot, the heat can degrade the essential oil's beneficial properties and cause the scent to dissipate more quickly. You don't have to measure the temperature of the liquid, but if you choose to, it should be between 101-120 degrees F (37-49) degrees C
Pour into containers: Carefully pour the mixture into small glass jars or tins and let it cool until solid.
Store and use: Keep in a cool, dry place. To use, take a small amount and massage it onto dry areas.
This homemade soothing dry skin balm is a must-have for anyone looking to moisturize, nourish, and soothe dry skin. You can create a deeply moisturizing dry skin balm with a few simple ingredients that keep your skin soft and supple year-round. I also wanted to mention that the ingredients you purchase for this homemade dry skin balm can be used to create many other skincare recipes. In my opinion, investing in different kinds of butter and oils for homemade skin care products can be more cost-effective than buying multiple separate products from the store. These ingredients will last a long time and can be used in many recipes. Try this homemade recipe today and enjoy the benefits of all-natural skincare.
