Challah Bread Recipe
What is bread pudding? Bread pudding is an old-fashioned dessert made with stale, cubed bread that is baked with a mixture of milk, sugar, and eggs (custard). What makes bread pudding so special and delicious is the warm, creamy, vanilla sauce poured over the top of the bread pudding when it's done baking. Bread pudding is not a traditional creamy pudding, it's more like french toast. Back in the day people were frugal and food didn't go to waste. In England, during the 11th and 12th centuries, bread pudding was known as poor man's pudding.
Why do I need stale bread for bread pudding?
Bread pudding was originally intended as a way to use up stale bread. By soaking the stale dry bread in a custard (milk and egg) the bread becomes moist by absorbing the liquid. The bread also absorbs the flavors of milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
How to make bread stale for bread pudding?
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees
Cube the bread into 1-2 inch cubes
Place the bread on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until the bread is dry.
You can also slice or cube the bread and leave it on the counter for a few hours.

½ cup of sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1. Cube 6-7 slices of hearty bread.
2. Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small saucepan over low heat warm the milk, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Simmer until the butter is melted, and the sugar is dissolved. Set the mixture aside to cool.
3. Butter a small baking dish (9x9, 9x6, 8x8) and add the cubed bread. Add the eggs to the milk mixture and whisk well to combine. Add the raisins (optional) to the milk mixture and pour the mixture over the bread. Allow the bread to soak in the milk for 20 minutes.
4. Bake for 35-45 minutes. The custard should be set but not dry, and the edges of the pudding should be a nice golden brown.
