Sugar Cookie Icing Recipe

Here’s an easy recipe for a smooth and shiny frosting that’s perfect for decorating sugar cookie cut-outs.

This easy homemade icing recipe is perfect for decorating cut-out cookies, making it a favorite for holiday baking and special occasions. With a smooth, glossy finish, it dries just firm enough to ensure your designs stay intact without becoming overly hard, allowing the cookies to remain soft and delicious. The icing sets beautifully, making it ideal for stacking cookies without smudging or sticking—a must for gift giving or cookie swaps. Best of all, it’s simple to make and versatile, allowing you to customize colors and consistency to create stunning, professional-looking cookies right in your own kitchen.

Sugar Cookie Icing Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 cups powdered sugar

• 2–3 tablespoons milk (adjust for consistency)

• 1 tablespoon light corn syrup

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract for a different flavor)

• Food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

1. Mix the Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract. The icing should be smooth and thick enough to hold its shape but still flow slightly.

2. Adjust Consistency: If the icing is too thick, add more milk, 1/2 teaspoon at a time. For a thicker consistency (like for outlining cookies), add more powdered sugar.

3. Add Color (Optional): Divide the icing into separate bowls and add food coloring as desired. Mix until the color is even.

4. Decorate: Use the icing immediately, or cover it with plastic wrap pressed onto the surface to prevent it from drying out. Apply with a piping bag, spoon, or knife.

5. Set: Allow the cookies to dry for a few hours (or overnight) for the icing to harden.

I hope you love this icing recipe as much as I do! It’s the perfect complement to our homemade sugar cookie cut-out recipe, which guarantees perfect cookies every time.
